EU pushes open-source standard as ’smart busines

It’s always nice see an open source proponent get headline coverage. Interesting to see where this eventually goes. Will it become another mobile phone debacle, with Europe on one standard and the U.S. on another?

BRUSSELS, Belgium - The EU’s top antitrust official called Tuesday on member governments to use open-source software, an apparent jab at Microsoft Corp.’s proprietary technology.

"No citizen or company should be forced or encouraged to choose a closed technology over an open one, through a government having made that choice first," European Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said at a conference organized by OpenForum Europe, a nonprofit group that advocates open standards.

Tracking Conversation in the Microblogosphere

There is an interesting <a href="http://avc.blogs.com/…nd-bl.html">post</a> today on A VC about the evolution of blogging. I concur with the author when he states that he hates the term ‘Blogging 2.0′, but for lack of a better term I’ll roll with it.

His point is that conversations are occurring in the microblogosphere that may or may not make their way back to the traditional blogosphere, and in turn are not picked up by blog aggregators like Techmeme. It’s an interesting issue. Web applications such as Twitter (when it’s not down) or Pownce are bringing our conversation much closer to real-time. In comparison, traditional blogs are not as responsive to real-time events.

It begs the question of if and how we track these scattered 140 character bits of conversation. Is it worthwhile, or do we wait until the conversation filters back to the blogosphere, and thus to aggregators like Techmeme?

My final thought is that I am convinced that we are moving into the world of citizen-journalism 2.0. Web applications like Twitter, Skype, Brightkite, YouTube, and many others provide the means to mobilize our news collection. As-it-happens microjournalism is here. The question is no longer how to capture an event, but rather how to collect events scattered across applications and communities.

I’m an Ambassador in My Own Mind

I’ve got some follow up news regarding a few different apps were mentioned previously at Matt’s Cuppa. To begin with, and to my disappointment, I was not chosen to be an Utterz Ambassador, despite submitting my story about the flack I get from certain family members about my Bessie t-shirt.

Even though I was overlooked, (For good reason. Those that were picked are long-time contributors to the Utterz community and will now be given even more of an opportunity to influence the direction of Utterz going forward. Congrats Ambassadors!) I will continue to say great things about Utterz and, like my post title states, I’ll always be an Ambassador in my own mind!

In the meantime, the guys from BooRah are kind enough to keep me informed about new developments on their end. I’ve described BooRah as a restaurant information aggregator, but they are quickly expanding beyond my simplified definition. In a recent email, Nagaraju Bandaru, BooRah’s co-founder and CTO, explained a partnership with BookingAngel that will allow online reservation to some 30,000 restaurants, as well as OpenID support. (<- Good move guys!)

And my last bit of news is that Molly over at Demo Girl came through with an Orgoo invite for me. I’ve already got my tea (an apricot oolong) picked out and a little space cleaned up in the sun on our patio, and I’ll be playing with (er, testing) that this afternoon. Molly, you rock!

Open source and mobile at OMX

A year ago using ‘open source’ and ‘mobile’ in the same sentence got you funny looks. Then came Android. And Verizon jumped in the fray with the claim of the ‘most open network’. Well, it now seems that open source is here to stay. It must be, since O’Reilly is putting together a conference around it!
