Because of its complex nature, most people assume that file synchronization is all there is to Live Mesh, but in reality, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Microsoft has big plans for the service and syncing files between computers and the cloud is just the start. When Live Mesh launched, it was currently a closed “technical preview” (that’s Microsoft for “beta”). But now it appears that the Live Mesh guys have quietly opened up the platform for all of the U.S.

I was sitting on the train literally moments ago when I overheard someone talking about their friend who spent four hours in the iPhone line this weekend and ANOTHER four hours waiting for them to get his new 3g iPhone up and running. Wow, there are some patient people out there!

I thought, since I’m getting tired of iPhone news and apparently there are many many people out there with 3g iDoorstops, I’d post this link to Chris Perillo’s demo of the open source Abdroid platform for mobile phones. As Perillo says, I’m not convinced that Android will take on the iPhone head to head, but it looks like it will (someday soon?) be a good open source alternative to Apple’s proprietary mobile platform.

This post is interesting reading about Facebook’s new Open Source database named Project Cassandra. Okay, you have to be somewhat geek to find it interesting. Being a database professional and Open Source advocate, I thought it was pretty cool stuff. It deals with the challenges of reading and writing huge and growing amounts of data both quickly and efficiently.

Project Cassandra is compared to two other similar databases built around the same challenges, both of which are propriety. If Project Cassandra can deliver the kind of performance that the Facebook user base expects while keeping up as Facebook gathers more users and expontially more data, it will be interesting to see how vocal the Facebook Data team will be about the project and if it impacts Open Source software adoption.

When researching mobile network up-and-comer Brightkite, I stumbled upon a slew of mobile networks already competing in the space. There’s MocoSpace, Friendstribe, Hobnobster, Dodgeball, Zyb, mig33, Mobiluck, MeetMoi, JuiceCaster, Loopnote, Rabble, Wadja, Treemo, groovr, flagr, Lime Juice, Loopt, and Next2Friends, to name just a few. There are, in fact, many, many more. Some focus on texting, some on sharing images, others on geo-tagging, and others on traditional social networking. They’re all acting like the mobile web is the wild west and if they can just get there first they might have a shot at winning.

We have 9,000 articles,” said Andrew Su, one of those behind the “Gene Wiki” project from the Genomics Institute at the Novartis Research Foundation in San Diego, California. “Our goal is to provide a uniform starting point for all genes,” he said, noting that afterwards it was up to other scientists to add information and keep it up to date, as happens now with Wikipedia entries. “The entire community will generate content and also oversee that content.”
