Will Facebook Influence Open Source Adoption?
telecommatt | July 14, 2008This post is interesting reading about Facebook’s new Open Source database named Project Cassandra. Okay, you have to be somewhat geek to find it interesting. Being a database professional and Open Source advocate, I thought it was pretty cool stuff. It deals with the challenges of reading and writing huge and growing amounts of data both quickly and efficiently.
Project Cassandra is compared to two other similar databases built around the same challenges, both of which are propriety. If Project Cassandra can deliver the kind of performance that the Facebook user base expects while keeping up as Facebook gathers more users and expontially more data, it will be interesting to see how vocal the Facebook Data team will be about the project and if it impacts Open Source software adoption.
