What’s Wrong with Free?
telecommatt | July 8, 2008In the article below, Dan Moren wonders why software should be free. Specifically iPhone software, but the point is universal. Why, he asks, shouldn’t we expect to pay for software when we pay for everything else under the sun? Why buck a system that’s worked for thousands of years?
In response, I have to ask: What if that system no longer suits the product? What if we’re seeing a transition to a new model where software is free? After all, our expectations as consumers are changing as quickly as is the role of software in our lives. I’m not saying that this is or is not happening. I’m saying that sometimes we need to explore possibilities that seem unlikely or illogical rather than plant our feet in what’s tried and true simply because it’s tried and true. There’s some truth to that old saying: If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.
