I had a Zen moment while watching this short video. At risk of sounding overly philosophical, this is a perfect example of the yin and yang relationships we are all a part of without even knowing. Here’s an ecosystem that has nothing to do with us. It doesn’t even need the Sun to provide energy like nearly everything else on our planet does. It’s totally isolated. Yet within it, there are fragile relationships that, if broken, would cause the entire system to collapse. A species of bacteria provides the means for creating energy, and therefore, life. No bacteria? No life.

This isolated ecosystem exists in parallel with many others. Patterns emerge here that are also found in others, including our own. Yin and Yang. Different, but not so different. So, what is the bacteria that we rely on for life? Are we protecting and nourishing it? I hope so!

Microsoft releases Windows XP SP3 RC2 - Download Squad

Microsoft has released Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release Candidate 2 to the general public.

For those of you who want Windows to crash even more, SP3 RC2 is out in the open. But keep in mind that "Release Candidate" is sort of like "Presidential Candidate" in that there is no guarantee that the one you endorse will make it all the way to the Oval Office. My advice: Practice patience and wait until there’s an SP3 out there with no RC at the end.

I received the following email from a reader. Although my experience was not the same, Matt’s Cuppa advises that you practice safe surfing by keeping your browser, firewall, and anti-virus software up to date. A good spyware scanner doesn’t hurt, either.

Hey, just thought I’d mention that I went to that Afrigadget site and got spyware warnings and had to quarantine a file and delete. Maybe it was something harmless, but it was worrisome. That happen to you?

If this is half as disturing to you as it is to me, then bookmark this article. And back up your machine before you travel!

While I travel with noting on my machine that I wouldn’t want plastered onto a Powerpoint slide, I’m disturbed by the lack of justification for these search and seizures. And it’s the seizures part that really makes alarms go off in my head. Is this helpful to law enforcement? Defely. Does it make one suspicious and untrusting of our government entities? Defnitely!

I think that this is a case where, if the government were more open, I would be more open. The article quotes a NY Times article stating that, in the government’s eyes, inspecting your hardrive is no different than inspecting your suitcase. Do you agree? I certainly don’t! Regardless, they don’t seize your suitcase to search it. Instead the merely haul out the contents for all to see. But then you get your suitcase back!

I happen to agree with Judge Pregerson when he states that harddrives are an extension of our own thoughts and memories, things which no one can violate without just cause and certain suspicion. This is obviously something that must be tempered. I fail to believe that there is not a way that we can find the child pornographers without creating a breach of ethics and perpetuating the mistrust we carry towards our own government.

Small business people don’t travel without laptops. On July 24, 2006, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit decided that US Customs and Border Patrol Officers had the right to search and seize a person’s laptop computer, computer discs and other electronic media (iPods and more). Personal and proprietary data is at risk, as is your notebook itself (some are not returned). The EFF has recently filed a suit demanding that Homeland Security disclose information on why it chooses to inspect some laptops and other electronic devices at the borders. On the government side is the argument that these search and seizures are aimed at and are helping prevent child pornography.

Like the article says, screen-sharing is pretty much the realm of commercial applications. And commercial apps = spending money. So any new entry into that realm that is free is worth it to me! I’d like to see how this stacks up against Zoho Meeting (which is also free…)
